Court Shoes vs Regular Sneakers: Why Montis Gets It Right

Your Feet Deserve Better

I see it at every open play session — players in running shoes, basketball shoes, even casual sneakers. And I get it. Buying sport-specific shoes feels like overkill. But after switching to Montis pickleball shoes, I'm convinced that proper court shoes are one of the most important gear investments you can make.

Why Court Shoes Matter

Lateral support: Pickleball involves constant side-to-side movement. Running shoes are designed for forward motion and offer minimal lateral stability. This is how ankle injuries happen. Court grip: The sole pattern on court shoes is designed for indoor and outdoor court surfaces. Running shoes can be too grippy (causing knee strain) or too slippery (causing falls). Low profile: Court shoes sit closer to the ground than running shoes, giving you better balance and quicker direction changes.

Montis Specifically

What I appreciate about Montis is that they designed their shoes specifically for pickleball movement patterns, not just relabeled a tennis shoe:

  • Toe drag protection for players who drag their back foot on serves
  • Cushioning in the forefoot where pickleball players spend most of their time
  • Breathable upper that doesn't turn into a sauna during long sessions
  • True-to-size fit (I ordered my normal size and they fit perfectly)

Break-In Period

Expect about 3-4 sessions before they feel fully broken in. The first session might feel slightly stiff, but they loosen up quickly without losing support.

The Investment Perspective

Good court shoes cost $80-130. A rolled ankle costs time off the court, potential medical bills, and weeks of frustration. The math is simple.
